maritime mobile stations

Hi

I have one request. In my log, station with /MM comming like unknown country.
No problems with /M or /P callsigns.
Also maybe /AM same trouble, I not try yet.

Thanks in advance
Best Regards YO4FZV Laur.

HI !
Isn't that correct?

If station is /MM or /AM it is located in "no man's land" (international waters or air space) so it can not have country status.

It is not allowed to use /MM when station is inside the territorial sea of a country. (quite often operators forget this rule)
Inside the territorial sea of a country station becomes CALL/M (not CALL/MM any more).

So I think "Unknown country" is very suitable result.

Thanks Saku for your fast

Thanks Saku for your fast reply.

Your point is corect from DXCC award.

Since "no man's land" is inside teritorial waters or air space I think is normal to have country status.
On the other hand is perfect normal to use /MM or /AM, as per regulations is allowed:

" Call signs of radio amateurs operating on mobile or portable stations may be made up of
the assigned call signs, followed by slash ("/") and the following letters:
a) MM – for mobile maritime or river ship stations;
b) AM – for mobile aeronautical stations;
c) M – for land mobile stations;
d) P – for portable terrestrial stations"

My log have already /MM and /AM callsigns, also I use /MM right now.

Hi Laur !

At the time ( on -1980's) I passed examination it was clearly stated in Finnish radio amateur regulations that extension /MM can be used only on ships that are sailing on international waters. I just checked current K-module (traffic and regulations) radio amateur examinations questions and that question is still there in same form.

International waters begin from outer territorial water border, that is 12 nautical miles from shore, or 12 nautical miles from inner territorial water border. In case of archipelago the inner territorial water border is a line drawn from outermost island to the shore.

In Finland we use following spelling alphabets that nicely tells where /M station is located.

OH1KH/M "M" spelled as "mobile" or "moottori"(engl. motor) or "Matti" that is official spelling alphabet in Finnish if station is in car, motorbike etc.

OH1KH/M "M" spelled as "Meri"(engl. sea) if station is in boat that is sailing/motoring in sea, but inside territorial water borders.

OH1KH/M "M" spelled as "Muikku"(engl. a fish name that lives in non salty waters) if station is in boat that is sailing/motoring in lake or river (non salty water).

OH1KH/MM "MM" spelled as "Meri Matti" (engl. see cases before...) if station is in boat that is sailing/motoring in sea, outside of outer territorial water borders. I.E. international waters.

Re:maritime mobile stations

This is correct, there is no other option.
No DXCC status and no zones for /MM and /AM stations.

A /MM has not a defined QTH. You can sail in the Caribbean or near Antarctica and still YO4FZV/MM.

Thanks for reply.

Thanks for reply.

All clear.

I keep my log with /MM, since I intend to send QSL's for this period.
CQRLOG make all the job with printing labels.
