So I checked the box but now realize there are configuration options on that start page and once I checked the "open recent log after program start" I cannot UN check it. The page just loads to fast for me to hit the check mark.
I can't find it in preferences anywhere.

From the main window go to File->Open or create new Log file; you can uncheck it there.

In fact there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off auto-open from the preferences. So, after you exit cqrlog with a text editor, open the file:
~/.config/cqrlog/cqrlog_login.cfg
and at the line:
AutoOpen=1
replace 1 with 0 and save.
This way you solve it easily. I use this simple solution.
