I have gone through the installation process. A desktop icon appears, but when I click on it, nothing happens. I have been using Ubuntu for some time, but am not that familiar with command lines, compiling, etc. Anyone willing to email me privately for some hand-holding trying to get this program to work. I have had it installed and working on 32 bit Ubuntu, but am unable to get it to work on 64 bit. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and go back to 32 bit?

Hello Roy,
Your problem is most likely, that you do not have the 32 bit version of the hamlib libraries installed in your Ubuntu Installation. I did the following steps to get it running:
Get getlibs from the following location: http://frozenfox.freehostia.com/cappy/ (to install it just click on the getlibs-all.deb file)
getlibs is a tool, to automatically download and install 32bit libraries on 64bit Ubuntu. Now, to get the 32bit version of hamlib, run the following in a terminal:
sudo getlibs -p libhamlib2
Once that has completed succesful, you should be able to run cqrlog.
Oh, and I am pretty sure you want to stay with 64bit OS ;-)

Installing the 32bit hamlib is not the end of problems. Unfortunately, the path used by the 32bit hamlib for loading the modules which control specific rigs is the same as the 64bit hamlib. This means the 32bit hamlib tries loading the 64bit modules and fails. An ugly solution is available here:
