xplanet projection and directional map

Hi there,

in my installation, xplanet couldn't find the directional map (bck.png) which I figured out, while I was looking for a different background, than the dark stars.

However, so far, I didn't found a way for xplanet to change the background through the config file, but simply by setting up a symbolic link, the directional map background is working:

cqrlog starts xplanet with this commandline:

Command line: /usr/bin/xplanet -config /home/rolf/.config/cqrlog/xplanet/geoconfig -glare 28 -light_time -range 2.5 -wait 5 -geometry 400x400+10+10 -window_title "CQRLOG - xplanet" -longitude 10.5417 -latitude 52.2292 -projection azimuthal -background /home/rolf/.config/cqrlog/xplanet/bck.png

but trying it from the console generates an error:

Warning: Can't find /home/rolf/.config/cqrlog/xplanet/bck.png in
xplanet/images
/home/rolf/.xplanet/images
/usr/share/xplanet/images

bck.png is located at /usr/share/cqrlog/images/ so you just need to add a symbolic link

~$ cd .config/cqrlog/xplanet
~/.config/cqrlog/xplanet$ ln -s /usr/share/cqrlog/images/bck.png bck.png

@Petr: maybe you could fix the link from the source code, that cqrlog is using the correct destination of bck.png. Thank's

use Xplanet with different Earth Image

Hi,

I spend some more time with Xplanet and cqrlog. I was not so satisfied with the Nasa's Visible Earth Image, which came originally with xplanet. Within a cqrlog view, it has a lot of dark parts in the azimuthal view.

So I found one, that fit more my needs on the Xglobe & Xplanet website: http://www.radcyberzine.com/xglobe/
It's a Super-Hires 2400x1200 px Map. Biosphere Map.

How to use it with cqrlog ? Just save it in your favorite location (e.g. ~/.config/cqrlog/xplanet) and edit the xplanet config file from cqrlog.
So this change should stay within cqrlog, if you use xplanet elsewise.

Please edit ~/.config/cqrlog/xplanet/geoconfig with a text editor:

[default]
max_radius_for_label=0
#marker_font=verdanab.ttf
marker_fontsize=14
#magnify=3000

[earth]
color={28, 82, 110}
#specular_map=earthspec.png
#bump_map=earthbump.jpg
#bump_scale=1
#map=day_sml.jpg
#cloud_map=
map=/home/rolf/.config/cqrlog/xplanet/bio_2400.jpg
magnify=0.9
grid=true
#satellite_file=iss
#arc_file=constellations
marker_file=/home/rolf/.config/cqrlog/xplanet/marker
twilight=12
shade=100

I basically made three changes:

  • add line color={28, 82, 110}
  • uncomment line map= and add link, where you saved your favorite worldmap
  • uncomment line grid=true
